Referring Students for Tutoring

General Information

  • We provide individual and small group tutoring (2-3 students) in many 100-200 level courses and 300-600 in Nursing courses (subjects list)
  • Our tutoring services involve a weekly commitment on the part of students.
  • Tutoring spaces can fill up quickly, particular for science courses, foreign language courses, and math courses. Therefore, we encourage students to apply for service as early in the semester as possible.
  • Students apply online by clicking on the gold-colored bar at the top of the page labelled, "Apply for Services."
  • A student may request a specific tutor, and we will do our best to honor that request provided their schedules match up.

Student Placement
Provided we have an available tutor, students are assigned their tutor within 24-48 business hours. If we do not have a tutor available, we immediately notify the student that: 1) they will be placed on our waiting list; and 2) provide them with additional forms of assistance including our academic skills staff, Supplemental Instruction Program offerings, and department tutoring (if it is provided).

Recommending Tutor Candidates

We greatly appreciate and rely on faculty to recommend students for tutoring positions. Below is a list of important considerations:

  • Candidates apply online through our employment section (gold bar at the top of the page)
  • Candidates must have earned a B+ or better in a course to tutor in it
  • Candidates must have earned at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and retain that GPA while employed
  • Candidates must be able to attend our paid trainings (described below)
  • Candidates must be available a minimum of 5 hours per week
  • Candidates must receive a faculty recommendation for each discipline they tutor in

Training Requirements

Tutors are required to attend training sessions throughout each academic semester of employment. All sessions are scheduled on Mondays from 4:00-5:00pm and Tuesdays from 5:00-6:00pm. Tutors are required to attend ten (10) training sessions per academic semester (one each week, on either Mondays or Tuesdays) in order to maintain good standing with the office.

As part of our international accreditation with the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), tutors earn international certifications at one of three levels by completing training requirements and providing direct assistance to their assigned students.
