Training

CRLA certification
The Student Success Center's tutoring program is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) at Levels I, II, and III. CRLA is a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of learning assistance, developmental education, and tutorial services at the college level. Its most vital function and overall purpose is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas, methods, and information to improve student learning and to facilitate the professional growth of its methods.

Training Sessions
Tutors are required to attend all 10 training sessions at a specific CRLA level during each academic semester of employment (depending on when you are hired). The only reasons permissible for missing training include sickness or emergencies. For more specific information on training, please access information under your Blackboard account.

CRLA Level Times & Locations
Level 1 Mon 4-5pm (GRAM/209) or Tues 5-6pm (PETT/224)
Level 2 Mon 3-4pm (PETT/227), 4-5pm (GRAM/302), or Tues 5-6pm (PETT/313)
Level 3 Wed 10-11am (PETT/150)

The Fall 2009 Tutor Training Catalog (pdf) is now available! It contains times, locations, and training descriptions for all three CRLA training levels.

* Tutoring sessions are not a valid excuse for missing training sessions. All tutoring sessions should end at least 15 minutes before the start of a training session and begin no earlier than 15 minutes after the training has concluded.

Training Requirements
Tutors are required to attend training sessions throughout the academic semester in order to maintain good standing with the office. We expect you to be punctual and participate in training sessions. Tutors earn an international certification at each level when they complete 10 hours of training and 25 hours of direct tutoring experience!

Continuing employment is contingent upon attendance at training sessions. Tutors who fail to meet the minimum training requirements will face probation or termination.

Please note: Returning tutors who have legitimate academic conflicts should be prepared to provide documentation in support of their conflict. In addition, they will need to discuss alternate training with the Assistant Director / Tutor Coordinator.
