SSS Tutoring Position Description:

  • Tutors provide individualized tutoring to first-generation college students. Tutors tell the Assistant Director for Tutoring Services what courses they feel comfortable tutoring and how many hours per week they would like to work. Then, the Assistant Director for Tutoring Services will place them with a tutee based on this information as requests for tutoring are received.
  • Once a tutor and tutee are assigned to each other, tutors will be responsible for arranging meeting times with their tutees. Tutoring occurs between the hours of 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM. The last session can begin at 8:00 PM. Tutors work Monday though Friday and Sundays are optional. For every tutee assigned, tutors will meet two (2) hours per week on different days. These weekly meetings are required from the date of assignment until Reading Day at the end of the semester.
  • Tutors will complete a BRIEF session record after every tutoring session. This will tell the Assistant Director for Tutoring Services about the topics covered and tutee learning styles. Tutoring sessions should run 55 minutes with the last 5 minutes dedicated to the completion of the session record. Every third (3rd) session, this portion may need to be extended to accommodate the completion of the tutee assessment rubric.
  • Tutors attend CRLA training one hour per week during the regular semesters. This is paid training that earns the tutor two things: 1) College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification and 2) eligibility for wage increases. There are three (3) CRLA certification levels and each level attained earns the tutor a $0.50 per hour increase.
