What is Special Support Services?
Special Support Services (SSS) is an academic support program for eligible undergraduate students, jointly funded by the U.S. Department of Education and UNCG. SSS offers eligible students an array of academic support services to foster student success and graduation.

What are the academic support services offered to eligible SSS students?
All SSS students receive comprehensive support that includes individual, personal, academic, career, financial aid, and graduate school guidance; skills assessment and individual skills instruction; individual tutoring in most undergraduate courses; and the use of the skills lab. Students also receive program newsletters and monthly updates.

What are the eligibility requirements for a student wanting to participate in SSS?
An eligible undergraduate is a first generation college student whose family income meets the established guideline determined by the U.S. Department of Education. Also, a student with a disability is eligible for program services.

How do I apply for service from SSS?
A student only needs to complete a SSS application and meet with the program director for a brief orientation meeting. During that meeting, the director will inform the student of his/her eligibility and provide specific information petaining to the available academic support services.

What does the learning lab offer to SSS students?
First, the lab offers students desktop computers with connection to the Internet and the UNCG network and library system. Paper is supplied to students free of charge. Students are encouraged to complete essay and research projects in the learning lab. Second, the lab maintains skill instructional videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs, and diskettes for those students wanting to upgrade their skills independently. Third, a learning skills specialist is housed in the lab area and is ready to assist students with academic skill assessment and skill development in reading, writing, and study skills. Lastly, students can come to the lab and pick up as many as 65 different study skills handouts to hone their study skills.

Where is SSS located and what are the office hours?
The office is located in room 110 McIver Building and the Learning Lab is located in room 142 McIver Building both are open Monday thru Friday from 8am - 5pm. Some evening hours are available by appointment.
