Assessing Your Skills

Assessing Your Skills

How Does This Work?
SSS views assessment as a tool for helping you become a successful college student. Our computer-based assessments are short, low-pressure, and confidential.

After completing the three assessments listed below, you will sit down with the Assistant Director for Academic Skills Services to discuss your results. You and the Assistant Director will work together to develop a plan of action that is right for you and tailored to fit your needs.

  • Writing / Grammar Assessment
  • E-LASSI (Electronic Learning and Study Strategies Inventory)
  • Online Reading Assessment

How Long Will It Take?
Most students complete the assessments over two separate sessions. The Online Reading Assessment is taken the first day and take approximately 45-60 minutes. The essay and E-LASSI portions are taken in the second session and usually take about 45 minutes combined. The results meeting is completed in about 30 minutes. We believe that the time you spend completing these assessments will give you a better understanding of your needs and will help us to provide effective assistance.

1) Writing/Grammar Assessment
For this measurement, you will write a brief essay in order to provide a general picture of your writing and grammar skills. Students complete this assessment in 15 minutes.

2) E-LASSI
This inventory is taken online and gives you an idea of your study skills strengths as a student in addition to pinpointing areas for improvement. The E-LASSI covers topics such as concentration, time management, study habits, motivation, information processing, and test-taking skills. Most students complete this assessment in 10-20 minutes.

3) Online Reading Assessment
Distributed by the publishers of the E-LASSI online version, H & H Publishing Co., the Online Reading Assessment provides important information regarding your vocabulary level and reading comprehension skills. The test takes between 45 and 60 minutes to complete.
