SSS Tutoring Services FAQ
Q. Can I become a tutor for Special Support Services and also receive tutoring?
A. Yes, you can. We encourage you to work hard and earn the grades so you can become a tutor for Special Support Services in addition to being a Special Support Services participant. You must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and you must make at least a B+ in the course or courses you wish to tutor.
Q. Can I have a tutor and go to Supplemental Instructions Program (SIP) sessions?
A. Unlike the LAC, SSS participants can participate in both SSS and SIP. In fact, we highly recommend it!
Q. Do I meet with my tutor every week, or can I just call them when I need their help?
A. Our services require that, for every tutor you have, you meet two (2) hours per week for the entire semester. Failure to follow this policy results in your services being revoked.
Q. What happens if I do not respond to contact/correspondence from the Assistant Director for Tutoring Services?
A. Your tutoring privileges may be revoked by the Assistant Director for Tutoring Services.
Q. What happens if I do not make initial contact with my tutor within 48 hours?
A. Failure to make initial contact with your tutor results in your name dropping to the bottom of the request list. We operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
Q. Can I request a tutor for a course in which I am not enrolled?
A. No, student must be enrolled in the course for which they are requesting a tutor.
Q. Can I request a tutor if I am auditing a course?
A. Yes, as long as you are enrolled as a registered auditor at UNCG.
Q. Can I request a tutor for a course I am enrolled in or auditing at another insitution?
A. No, we only offer our services for UNCG courses.
Q. Can I request a tutor if I am enrolled in a course through the Greater Greensboro Consortium?
A. We recommend that you first attempt to request a tutor through the school where the course is being taught, due to difference in teaching and course material covered. If you cannot acquire tutoring, see the Assistant Director for Tutoring Services.
Q. Can I request a tutor to help me prepare for graduate/professional school exams?
A. See the Assistant Director for Academic Skills Services for guidance and planning in this area.
Q. Can I communicate with my tutor through interfaces such as "Facebook" or "My Space"?
A. No, communication must be through UNCG email or by telephone. No Exceptions.
Q. Is it okay for me to invite a friend to my tutoring sessions?
A. No. Your friend must acquire his/her own tutor... No Exceptions! We suggest that you encourage them to apply for tutoring through SSS or the LAC.
