Transfer2Transfer

What are participants saying?

My goal is to become the best student I can be. Because of my mentor, I am signing up for clubs, becoming a leader, and striving to be my best self. My mentor taught me to use all of my resources no matter what type of environment I am in. Soak up everything I can now, so then later in life I can apply it.

My mentor has helped me with knowing where to go for information and helping to find the necessary resources, which has been the biggest challenge. She has never hesitated to help me or point me in the right direction. She always follows up as well to make sure I have what I need.

My mentor shared how I can practice self-care while juggling classes, working, family, etc.

I am volunteering as a mentor because coming to UNCG as a transfer student, veteran, and single mom was a challenge when first adjusting (and still is at times). It's important for students to have someone that they can relate to and rely on if they need a support system during their first year at UNCG. I would like to be a form of support for students to lean on as they need it.

I would share that it is a great experience where you develop this interesting relationship with your mentee that results in a two-way street of learning and growing."

My mentee and I have set the goal of feeling more involved on campus and to ensure that she is getting that ‘college‘ experience.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

What is the time commitment for this program?
The length of the mentorship program is one academic year (August to May). However, you’re more than welcome to stay connected with your Transfer2Transfer mentee(s) after the program formally ends. Mentors and mentees are expected to connect at least once per month. Connection can be in person, via SMS text relay, MS Teams, or via email. Got other ideas? You can discuss them with your Transfer2Transfer partner.
What is the Matching Process like?

Prospective mentors and mentees receive an email invitation in July. After completing a survey about themselves and their backgrounds, Mentor Collective matches pairs based on what both say are most important to them. Mentors must also complete an online mentor training. It’s short but informative.

The matching timeline is based upon a desire to make the best match between Transfer2Transfer mentees and mentors. Every effort is made to match mentees and mentors as soon as possible. It may take some time as recruitment occurs over several weeks. We thank you in advance for your patience.

Spots are limited; so we strongly encourage you to sign-up when you receive the email invitation.

For incoming transfers, if you are not matched with a mentor this year, there are many support services available and many ways to get involved. For prospective mentors, if you are not matched this year, you can sign up again next year. We always need volunteers!

Why should I choose to participate?

Mentors

In addition to supporting a fellow student, as a mentor, you’re building a marketable skill set, including improved interpersonal communication, increased confidence, and motivation tools. You won’t be “going this alone.” Mentor Collective offers training and support. UNCG provides additional information regarding resources and support. We have your back! This is a learning and growing experience for you as well as your mentee(s). You have an opportunity to refresh and reinforce your use of student support services. We recognize your position as a fellow student, and you are also encouraged to use UNCG’s resources in support of your academic goals.

Mentees

You gain a listening ear. There are many resources available on campus from academic advisors to professors to counselors to numerous support offices. Your Transfer2Transfer mentor serves a different role. They have the student viewpoint. They have been where you are, and they understand that transferring is a process. It’s a transition. You’ll have an opportunity to make early connections on campus. We know that community is important. Learn what communities exist and how you can get involved.
Is there any cost to participating in Transfer2Transfer mentoring?
