Course Proposal Process

There will be three pathways available for faculty and departments to request a MAC competency designation for either new or existing UNCG courses for the 2021-2022 academic year. These pathways and corresponding dates and deadlines are outlined below. Additional details on each will be made available as logistics are finalized.

Faculty interested in submitting a course proposal for inclusion in the new general education program can find additional information and resources from the UTLC’s MAC Course Development Tools. Additionally, the University offers three course design incubators for development of MAC courses. Each incubator is designed to provide resources, time, and personnel (such as TIO, ITCs, Assessment) to help faculty design and develop new courses. Incubators are held during Fall Break, Spring Break, and mid-May.

Please also visit the MAC News and Updates section for the most up-to-date guidance on course proposals as the Implementation Team and General Education Council continues to prepare for the launch of the MAC in fall 2021.

Express Review

This “express” approval option is exclusively for courses with existing GEC designation that have been pre-identified by the MAC Implementation Committee and General Education Council for inclusion in the MAC. Similar to the traditional GEC recertification process, department heads, chairs, or their designees will be required to verify through an online Qualtrics survey that the courses/sections submitted through the GEC to MAC Express are in compliance with the criteria outlined in the MAC, including the selected competency’s Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). Departments with courses that qualify for the GEC to MAC Express will be notified by email from the office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies by May 15, 2020.

The submission deadline for course proposals using the GEC to MAC Express Review is August 30, 2020.

Full Curricular Review
for New Course Proposals

Faculty interested in developing new course proposals for MAC designation will need to plan on a full curricular review from both the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and the General Education Council. Keep in mind that many departments, and each school and college, also have separate course proposal review procedures that will need to be completed before courses can be submitted for UCC and GEC consideration. Course proposals will need to demonstrate how the associated SLOs will be achieved for the requested MAC competency designation.

The UCC submission deadline for new course proposals requiring Full Curricular Review is October 23, 2020.

Expedited Curricular Review for Existing Undergraduate Courses

The Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and General Education Council have established a collaborative, expedited review process for existing undergraduate courses. The expedited review is appropriate for existing courses that are not part of the current GEC program, as well as existing courses carrying GEC category or marker designations that may require amendments to SLOs, assignments, or other course content to ensure they meet the criteria outlined for competency designation in the MAC.

The submission deadline for courses seeking an Expedited Curricular Review is February 1, 2021.
