Few experiences in your academic career have as much potential for influencing your collegiate experience as academic advising. Much more than getting your selected courses, developing a professional relationship with your academic advisor will help you make informed choices and decisions about your education and career. Below you’ll find quick links to the people and resources at UNCG that will help you make the most of your academic advising experience!

UNCG Advisors and Advising Centers

The who, what, when, and where for academic advising depends on your selected major and what school or college you are part of.

In some schools and colleges, students are assigned a professional academic advisor that they’ll work with from the moment you declare their academic major until the day you graduate. In others, you may start with a professional advisor and then eventually transition to working with a faculty advisor who also teaches in your academic major. You can find your academic advisor at the top of your Degree Works evaluation or by logging in to UNCGenie.

Each of UNCG’s schools and colleges has an academic advising center staffed with professional advisors who offer both scheduled advising appointments and drop-in hours for students. Your advising center is always a great place to start if you have academic advising related questions.

Registration Dates and Deadlines

Like your assigned academic advisor, the timing of academic advising can also vary just slightly across different academic schools, colleges, and departments. In general, you can plan on the following timelines for each term:

March – Advising begins

October – Registration opens

October – Advising begins

April – Registration opens

December – Advising Begins

February Registration Opens

It’s important that you meet with your academic advisor as soon as possible once advising begins, so that you can be ready to register for classes as soon as your registration window opens!

Your registration window depends on your classification and the total number of hours you have earned. Term specific information about registration windows is posted by the University Registrar’s Office every semester. You can also find your assigned registration windows inside UNCGenie.
