Mission Statement

The mission of our Communication Lab is to connect authors with consultants; to make good communicators better communicators; and to help visiting students, faculty, and staff develop a consciousness about themselves as authors that will assist them after they leave the Communication Lab. To this end, our Lab practices a collaborative approach to sessions, where authors and consultants engage in one-on-one conversations about speaking, writing, or digital composing—conversations that center on shared knowledge and expertise, as opposed to hierarchical instruction that treats communication lab sessions as remediation. Understanding our Lab as a place where collaboration and shared knowledge guide our practices supports a view of communication center work that grants both authors and consultants authority, rather than consultants alone. This view is important because, if we are truly to help all authors become better communicators, we must encourage them to be in control of their projects and to participate actively in a communication lab session.
