The Communication Lab offers UNCG students, staff, and faculty the opportunity for individual or group conversations on any communication project. At the Communication Lab, we believe that everyone deserves to be the author of their own story, and that’s why we provide feedback on writing, speaking, and visual projects at any point in the creation and design process.
Depending on where you are in your process when you visit the Communication Lab and what your major concerns are, a consultation might involve deciding how to approach a particular assignment, identifying a thesis and sculpting a rough outline, organizing a speech, reading a rough draft to check for general coherence and clarity, reviewing a video of a recorded speech for feedback, incorporating new material into a revision, addressing questions of grammar and sentence structure, strategies for improving interpersonal communication, learning how to cite sources properly – or any of a myriad of other questions about speaking, writing, or visual rhetoric! The staff conducted over 5,000 sessions last year, and each one was different because each author and each project is different.
Here are a few reminders as you get ready for a visit to the Communication Lab!
- Bring a copy of the assignment sheet (if for a course) and access to your draft (if applicable)
- Know your professor’s expectations for speaking or writing in your discipline
- Bring any previous feedback that you have received
- Your consultant will ask you what you want to work on: Have an answer! Think about what to address in your Communication Lab session, as this will focus your efforts and get the process of self-reflection started, which is an instrumental part of the speaking and writing processes.
