About TRIO
TRIO is a family of federally funded programs designed to help students prepare for, enroll in, and succeed in higher education. All TRIO programs are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and serve students who are first-generation, income-eligible, and/or students with disabilities.
At UNCG, the Office of TRIO Programs houses:
- Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program – Supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds who aspire to earn a Ph.D.
- Student Support Services (SSS) Classic – Serving students across all majors
Together, these programs provide comprehensive academic and developmental support to empower undergraduate students to persist and achieve their educational goals. Our offices are located on the second floor of Forney Success Commons.
UNCG-McNair Scholars Program
The UNCG-McNair Scholars Program is a federally funded TRIO initiative that prepares undergraduates for doctoral study. Each year, 25 high-achieving students from underrepresented backgrounds are selected for a transformative experience that includes faculty-mentored research, an 8-week Summer Research Institute (with a stipend and on-campus housing), and year-round graduate school preparation.
McNair offers personalized academic support, research development, and professional growth opportunities to help scholars thrive in their chosen fields. Participants benefit from faculty mentorship, graduate school tours, GRE preparation, personal statement and application guidance, and opportunities to present at state, regional, and national research conferences. The program also provides academic and professional development workshops, financial planning for graduate school, and cultural and community-building events, all designed to support scholars on their path to earning a Ph.D. Complete the Interest Form or contact us at uncgrem@uncg.edu for more information. We look forward to connecting with you!
