SI Frequently Asked Questions

Students' Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend SI sessions?

SI sessions are open to any student enrolled in the designated course and section for their SI leader. Students must attend the SI sessions for their assigned SI Leader. Students are not permitted to attend SI sessions for courses/sections they are not enrolled in.

Children are pets are not allowed to attend face-to-face SI sessions, but service animals are welcome.

Students who are auditing a course are allowed to attend SI but they must notify their SI Leader, since they will not appear on the class roster.

How do I become an SI Leader?

We're always looking for hard-working and enthusiastic students to be SI Leaders!  You don't have to major in the same department as the course you want to lead-- you just need a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, a B+ or higher in the course you want to lead, and a faculty recommendation from a professor in the same department as the course you want to lead.

Can I bring my child to my SI sessions?

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but children are not permitted in face-to-face Supplemental Instruction sessions.

Where is SI located?

Sessions are scheduled in classrooms around campus, or online via Zoom.  Ask your SI Leader to verify session locations, or check your SI page on Canvas.

The Academic Achievement Center, which houses SI, is located in the Jackson Library, suite 023, on UNCG's main campus.

How do I know if I'm taking a course that has SI?

If you are enrolled in a course supported by SI, your SI Leader will introduce themselves at the beginning of the semester. Your SI Leader will also invite you to SI sessions at the beginning of each class, and will let you know locations, days, and times of sessions. Additionally, students in SI-supported classes will be added to an SI Canvas page specifically for their SI sessions.

What if I can't attend all of the SI sessions?

It is recommended that you attend one or two SI sessions per week, depending on your schedule. However, if your schedule doesn't allow you to go to ANY sessions, talk with your SI Leader to see if you can get copies of materials.

You can also look into attending AAC Tutoring services or AAC Academic Skills services.

What if an SI session starts 10 minutes before I get out of another class?

You can still come!  Supplemental Instruction sessions are voluntary. Even if you're late (or need to leave early), you can still get something out of the session during the time you're there.

If I don't start attending SI at the start of the semester, can I still come later?

Of course!  While we recommend attending SI from the beginning of the semester to get a headstart on the challenging content and begin building academic skills strategies right away, you can start attending SI sessions at any time during the term.  SI is here for you, when you need it.

Faculty's Frequently Asked Questions

What is Supplemental Instruction?

Supplemental Instruction is a peer-facilitated review program that supports select challenging undergraduate courses. SI focuses on providing student-to-student engagement with challenging material from large lecture classes. Engagement is facilitated by a peer who has taken the course before and been successful in it.  Sessions are scheduled three times a week, drop-in style, and the SI Leader also attends class to review the course material and serve as a role model for students in the class.

Why was my course selected to be supported by Supplemental Instruction?

The Academic Achievement Center (AAC) bases course selection for Supplemental Instruction and Tutoring using five points of consideration:

  1. A DFW rate of 30% or higher.
  2. High first-year enrollment or a major requirement
  3. High student demand for support
  4. Faculty have advocated for course support
  5. Emphasis on STEM courses.

Your specific course may have fit any one (or multiple) of these items.

What will I be required to do?

Prior to the start of the semester, we ask that faculty submit recommendations for potential SI Leaders, and work with the SI staff to find a perfect fit for your class.

We also ask that faculty in SI-supported courses meet with the SI Leader for about 30 minutes a week throughout the semester. These meetings give you and the SI Leader an opportunity to discuss the Leader's session plans, clarify any course material the Leader may need additional support with, review worksheets and handouts the Leader has developed, and discuss any challenges the Leader and/or the students are having.  It is a great opportunity to ask the Leader questions about how things are going in the sessions. These weekly meetings can be structured in whichever way works for you and the Leader. They can happen face-to-face, virtually, over the phone, etc. It's fine to have one 30-minute meeting each week, or break the 30 minutes into multiple smaller chunks of time.

Additionally, the SI Leader appreciates a few minutes at the start or end of class to make announcements and/or invite the students to attend the next scheduled SI session.

What should I expect from the SI Leader?

The SI Leader will attend each class meeting to review material and act as a model student. Leaders will then plan games, activities, worksheets, or host open sessions for students to ask questions. You should expect your Leader to regularly communicate with you and your students about their sessions.

Can I ask my SI Leader to help me in class?

The SI Leader should be treated like any other student in the class. They are not a teaching assistant, and should not be asked to grade work, proctor in-class assessments, or other tasks that are better suited to other roles.

What should I expect from Supplemental Instruction?

The Academic Achievement Center is here to support you and your course!  We are happy to provide you with attendance numbers and talk to you about SI Leader recruitment, training, and support.

SI staff train our leaders to offer impactful sessions. Leaders receive pre-semester training on facilitation strategies, collaborative learning techniques, and learning strategies. They also attend regular in-service meetings to discuss ideas and new techniques.

You are always welcome to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have about the program, via email to aac@uncg.edu or you can reach out directly to Emily Polk, Senior Assistant Director of Academic Excellence, at eefinch@uncg.edu.

Will the SI Leader share the attendance lists from SI sessions?

In line with the recommendations of the International Center for Supplemental Instruction, we keep session attendance anonymous.  Supplemental Instruction is a voluntary co-curricular experience, and as such, we want students to attend because of the value the sessions hold to their understanding of the course material.

Students who wish to release their attendance records to a faculty member can do so by completing a record release waiver in the Academic Achievement Center.

What should I look for in a potential future SI Leader?

We require SI Leaders to have a faculty recommendation, so we appreciate any students you can recommend!

The minimum requirement is for SI Leaders to have a B+ or higher in the course and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Beyond that, we're looking for students who are excited about the course material and about helping their peers succeed in the class.

All candidates will interview with the SI Staff and be approved by the instructor teaching the course to ensure they are a good fit. Feel free to each out to Emily Polk (eefinch@uncg.edu) with any recommendations you have for future SI Leaders.
